Hydrovac Slot Trenching in Tampa Bay

When you don't know exactly where lines cross your work area, cut a narrow slot across it and find out.

What is slot trenching?

Slot trenching is a narrow trench, often only 6 to 12 inches wide, cut with pressurized water and vacuum. It has two main jobs. The first is discovery: a slot cut across the footprint of a new foundation, pit, or bore path will reveal every utility that crosses it, including the ones nobody marked. The second is installation, where a narrow slot gives room to lay conduit, irrigation, or small diameter pipe without opening a full width trench.

Because the slot is so narrow, there is far less material to remove and haul, far less backfill to bring in, and far less pavement or landscape to restore afterward. In finished areas like sidewalks, medians, and commercial landscaping, that difference shows up directly in the restoration bill.

When you need it

  • Clearing the footprint of a new foundation, vault, or pit
  • Finding every crossing along a planned bore path or trench line
  • Installing conduit, irrigation, or low voltage lines in tight spaces
  • Working near tree roots, where a wide cut would damage the root zone
  • Trenching beside existing slabs, walls, or footings that cannot be undermined
  • Locating lines that are unmarked or not shown on any record

How we do it

1

Lay out the slot

We mark the slot line with you across the area to be cleared, at right angles to the expected utilities where possible.

2

Excavate in passes

The slot is cut in shallow passes to the target depth so any utility is uncovered gradually, never struck.

3

Expose crossings

Every line that crosses the slot is left in place and exposed for measurement and identification.

4

Backfill or install

The slot is backfilled, or left open for your crew to install conduit or pipe before backfilling.

Tampa Bay conditions

Field note

In Tampa Bay sand, a narrow slot holds its shape far better than a wide open cut, especially when the water table is close to the surface. The vacuum pulls water out as the slot is cut, so you are not pumping out a flooded trench before work can continue.

What to include in your quote request

The more of this you can share, the faster and more accurate your quote will be:

  • Length, width, and depth of the slot
  • Whether the slot is for discovery or installation
  • Surface type and any landscaping or roots to protect
  • Whether spoil can be returned to the slot or must be hauled off

Slot Trenching FAQ

How narrow can a slot trench be?

Slots are commonly 6 to 12 inches wide, sized to the hose and the work. If you need room for a specific pipe or conduit, tell us the diameter.

How deep can you slot trench?

Typical slots run a few feet deep, but deeper slots are possible. Give us the target depth so we can plan hose length and disposal.

Is slot trenching faster than hand digging?

In most Tampa soils, yes, and it is far safer around live utilities than a shovel or a bucket.
